I am a newly converted "loose parts" design addict thanks to Reggio. I started to do this on my own in my classroom feeling like a Montessori renegade until I stumbled upon similar work that has been happening in Reggio classrooms all along without me knowing. What a relief! I now feel part of a bigger picture in the offerings to children in flexible art. Being a visual person, I relish these endless possibilities in form, color and design work for children. Yet, I love doing these works.
They are very calming and meditative.
I put this work on a table and let children flow through it all day taking turns. The wooden trivet in the center of a glassed empty frame gives a focal point to this work. Again, estate items of tiny leather organ pads and potpourri items offer a dainty choice in designing. One child said she wanted to become an artist after doing this creative exercise. Win.
